The name 'LEGO' is an abbreviation of the two Danish words "leg godt", meaning "play well".
Dave and I both played with Legos as a child. I remember purchasing my first set. It came in a bag. It was a pirate, a parrot and a little treasure chest full of gold. That was the gateway set. Pretty soon I was building the whole pirate ship in my best friend's basement. (It's a slippery slope!)
When Dave and I had our two boys, we knew eventually we'd enter the world of Lego again, but I didn't see it coming as soon as it did. I believe the boys were 3 and 4 when Dave came home from a business trip bearing gifts of Lego sets. I was in a panic! So many tiny pieces!
"Um, Honey, the box says 4 and up."
"Yeah, so? It's FINE."
(his answer for EVERY concern I have. Tell me that's a guy thing?)
I wasn't worried about the pieces being a choking hazard, no. I wasn't even really worried about stepping on them. (although I should have been!) I just didn't like messes and I hadn't let down my housekeeping standards yet. (That would happen a while after child #3.) Eventually I adapted and embraced the little plastic blocks as part of our family. Ashton, in particular, really LOVES his Legos. We have a big, flat, wooden box in our living room overflowing with them. When I read to them each day, they build unique and interesting creations. It's a beautiful thing.
Legos will always be a part of our family.
