Freaks and Fancies

The boys and I had just cleaned up the yard, trimmed the bushes and mowed the lawn. Aside from the patches of struggling grass, things were looking pretty spiffy. But then I walked outside to see

random objects placed here and there; the fake tree from the patio, yard tools, nerf guns and ALL, yes all, of my clothespins from the line strewn about. My first inclination was to get anxious and upset about, what to me, was a mess. "Can't we just keep the yard looking decent for like TEN MINUTES?!?" However, I have been learning about children and how they learn through play. I paused, and decided to take a different approach and get an insider's view.

As I inquired about the setup, I was quickly whisked into a different world and I could suddenly see their vision. I was pulled into the bushes and into a secret pathway full of adventure. There was a garage, a lookout tower, a jungle tunnel and a river full of fish. As I am able to overcome my adult tendencies, I am able to glimpse childhood in all of its magic.

“…No person, no matter how vivid an imagination he may have, can invent anything half so droll as the freaks and fancies that originate in the lively brains of little people.”
